Centre of mass

The bigest tower from clothes peg

Build the tower made of clothes pegs.

What do you think, how many clothes pegs you need for the tower construction?

Whose tower is the highest?

The Physics in this activity

The centre of mass of an object is the point through which the weight of that object acts in a uniform gravitational field - due to that it is often called the centre of gravity.

Increasing the area of the object base will also increase the stability of the object, the bigger the area the more stable the object.

Butterfly

The centre of mass of an object is the point through which the weight of that object acts in a uniform gravitational field - due to that it is often called the centre of gravity.

These butterflies have little weights (1 cent coins) under their wings that shift their centre of gravity just under the tip of the butterfly 'head'. The centre of gravity point always lies on a vertical line that passes through the point of suspension.

For an object to be stable, its centre of gravity has to be below its point of suspension. That´s why the butterfly supported on a finger, keeps balance and does not falls over.
